George Herman

artist's statement

these are the most recent paintings in a lifelong painting project; or, these are all parts of one painting that has been going on for twenty-five years; I'm assuming it will continue into the forseeable, yet indeterminate future
in it's current manifestation, the project consists of two parallel, sometimes overlapping, interweaving streams of paintings: the abstract work and the sky paintings/landscapes. The landscapes often begin as abstract images, and the abstract paintings sometimes start out as landscapes
nature, painting, and life are all organic, visceral, wet and changing; in all three, there is a tenuous balance between order and chaos
the meaning of a painting is, ultimately, the meaning that arises out of the thoughts, feelings, emotions, associations, recollections, resonances, visceral reactions, etc. experienced by a particular viewer
some of the materials I use in the paintings are oil paint, water- based urethane paints, alkyd and latex house paints, varnishes, stains, and shellacs; the paintings are mostly done on wood
the paintings are done by pouring, scraping, rolling, sanding, using various consistencies, transparencies, and opacities of paint
